Over the past year, climate change has spurred higher prices as well, with weather events causing supply chain issues and shortages in both labor and product. But luckily, projected prices are here to help us out when it comes to making our grocery lists.

And because United States consumers use food from all around the world, everything from floods in California to El Niño which is expected to be particularly strong this year to droughts in Asia and Australia can impact the price of pantry staples and produce.

This past year saw a rice shortage spurred by heavy rains and an Indian export ban, a sugar shortage just in time for the holiday season, and an orange shortage caused by diseased trees. Because of basic supply and demand principles, lower stock means higher prices, so shortages often wreak havoc on grocery bills.

But there are ways to lessen the burden of higher prices. The good news is that because nobody loves higher prices, consumers tend to buy something else when prices jump significantly. That means that over time, lower prices win once again.

It is also a market signal to produce more in the future because prices are high. That also works to bring down prices. Buying less of a luxury product is usually alright, but when it comes to pantry staples, waiting it out can be a struggle. If oranges are really expensive, try something new.

Just as inflation refers to rising prices, "deflation" refers to prices falling — and even though it may help consumers, it presents a surprisingly tricky challenge for businesses and policymakers. In contrast to periods of rising inflation in which corporate profit margins typically grow, deflation tends to squeeze companies in a few ways.

For one thing, deflation lowers the prices customers are willing to pay, but it also can cause them to delay purchases in the expectation of further discounts.

Neither is particularly comfortable for businesses or central bankers , which is why the discussion is about keeping inflation positive and under a target, rather than flipping the switch into deflation. However, instead of retail prices, a PPI provides a measure of the average prices paid to domestic producers for their output. PPIs are reported for nearly every industry in the goods-producing sector of the economy. Three major PPI commodity groups are of interest to food markets: unprocessed foodstuffs and feedstuffs , processed foods and feeds , and finished consumer foods.

These farm- and wholesale-level prices give a general sense of price movements across various stages of production in the U. food supply chain. The PPIs are typically far more volatile than the downstream CPIs. Price volatility decreases as products move from the farm to the wholesale sector to the retail sector.

Because of multiple processing stages in the U. food system, the CPI typically lags movements in the PPI. The PPI is thus a useful tool for understanding what may soon happen to the CPI. USDA, ERS does not forecast industry-level PPIs for unprocessed, processed, and finished foods and feeds.

However, these prices have historically shown a strong correlation with the all-food and food-at-home CPIs.

In , prices increased for two categories tracked by USDA, ERS: farm-level cattle Prices decreased for 11 categories, with the largest price declines for farm-level eggs In , prices are predicted to increase for 3 PPI categories and to decrease for 10 categories, though their measures of uncertainty do not rule out either an increase or decrease in prices in Greater volatility in farm- and wholesale-level prices lead to wider prediction intervals for these products compared to retail-level products.
