Heat and light are the enemies, so if you must keep oil by the stove, put it into small containers that will be emptied quickly. For more great meal ideas and grocery tips, please sign up for our free newsletters. Nuts contain oil and, like oils, can turn rancid and taste funny.

The life expectancy of nuts stored in the pantry is just a few weeks, but they last up to a year in the freezer. Processed nut butters, such as peanut butter, last longer in the pantry than nuts — up to a year for an unopened jar and a few months after opening. Natural nut butters without preservatives have a shorter shelf life and should be stored in the fridge after opening, for up to six months.

It's sometimes worthwhile to buy those giant containers of herbs and spices when you find a good deal. Dried, whole leaf herbs such as thyme, oregano, and rosemary retain their flavor for up to three years, but anything ground or powdered has a much shorter shelf life.

Keep dried herbs far from light, heat, and dampness but never in the fridge, where they might absorb odors. Salt lasts indefinitely, and whole peppercorns hold their potency for a few years.

Keep both away from moisture. Other whole spices, such as cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon sticks, maintain flavor for a long time but rarely go on sale. Mustard, ketchup, horseradish, sriracha, and other condiments go on sale frequently and stay potent for at least six months after being opened.

Although salad dressings and mayonnaise should be used up a little more quickly once the seal is broken, unopened bottles keep for quite a while, so buy several if storage space isn't an issue.

While most dairy products have a short shelf life, there are some you should feel free to buy in bulk and freeze. Hard, semi-hard, and aged cheeses such as cheddar, Monterey Jack, and Parmesan can be frozen successfully for up to four months if you wrap them well.

It's best to grate or cook with cheese that's been frozen, rather than eat it on crackers or a sandwich. Butter freezes well and keeps for up to a year. Eggs can be frozen for up to six months, if they are scrambled lightly with a bit of salt and put into freezer containers.

When a sale hits, fill your shopping basket with frozen fruits and vegetables. Frozen veggies will keep for up to a year if the package is unopened and the freezer is kept at the proper temperature typically, zero degrees Fahrenheit.

Most fresh fruit can also be frozen. To freeze oranges, peel and divide into sections, place in freezer containers, and cover with water. We almost always have a pound of butter stored in the fridge.

For the most expensive option, we were surprised Trader Joe's was missing crushed tomatoes from their shelves. Being that TJ's option isn't really crushed tomatoes, we'll call Whole Foods organic ounce can of crushed tomatoes the most expensive. If this research proved anything, it's that Aldi is by far the cheapest option when it comes to pantry essentials.

Of the 14 items we compared, Aldi boasted the most inexpensive option 10 times. As for the most expensive—Whole Foods unsurprisingly has the most expensive item seven times. While yes, many of Whole Foods store brand products are organic, looking at the grocery list from a purely price-oriented perspective… they're probably not worth the visit when you're looking to restock your staples.

We did learn a few surprising tidbits during the investigation. Publix was unexpectedly expensive at least, I didn't expect it, considering that's where I typically do my pantry staple shopping with five counts of ranking most-expensive.

Kroger and Target were almost always a few cents off from each other rumor has it they may merge , and fall closely behind Aldi on the cheaper end. Trader Joe's prices fluctuate quite a bit depending on the product—sometimes ranking more expensive and sometimes a bit cheaper, but not much.

As well as ground flax seeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds, and raw unsalted nuts. Whole food, plant-based diets are generally not expensive.

It can be somewhat expensive if you always buy produce that are organic and out of season. But all things considered, plant based diets are significantly less expensive than meat based diets when you compare food of the same quality.

You have to compare apples to apples 😉. For example… organic, pasteurized, hormone-free meat and dairy is very expensive especially compared to organic vegetable produce.

We did this by…. Cooking plant based meals is fun, creative, and A LOT cleaner 5 We planned meals and meal-prepped really well so that no food would be wasted.

But I love the list! We eat chicken mainly at our house. Tofu is also great to have fried with broccoli , soya sauce and garlic , it is good for you and not very expensive.

I hate making pantry-based meals with just shelf-stable foods; produce really elevates a dish. For example, I freeze old bananas and use them in smoothies. Picky Pincher. I like the way you think. Loading up on the veggies is the way to go. I also freeze fruit and use them in smoothies!!!

I tend to bake chicken breasts, cook rice, and make veggies then switch up the sauce every week. Quick, easy, and cheap! FinancialConfession — I love Almond Butter and have started to use it instead of peanut butter as a healthier choice.

It is expensive, but totally worth it to me 😀. Powdered cheese? My wife loves cheese and our fridge is stocked with cheese. Also, you probably should avoid doing more research into ground meat. I did and ground my own meat now… Good list. Cheese powder for those like me who have the taste buds of a 12 year old Joe.

I love reading these lists!! We have tons of rice and oats in our house. My kids are obsessed with granola bars and oatmeal!

So we either buy or make them constantly?
